400 word synopsis

Whilst getting my ideas for our thriller film, I watched the thriller “one hour photo” and also “shutter island” these are two totally different thrillers. This gave me a basic idea for my ideas and what I can do within my story-line but also lighting and music, both of these showed a great and deep detail into one person and what they do.
From the films, which I watched, I gained ideas of:

·      Focusing on one person and the weird/wonderful things that they do, this was gained from the film “one hour photo” this gives a good base to focus and build a story line behind.
·      We thought of a news report being heard in the background, while the screen in blank but then slowly showing small clips through out the movie. This news report was about the man and his dealings through out what he has done being reported.
·      From the films which I watched I discovered the use of lighting has been a key point, so I believe that a dark scene would be good start this could be just dark lighting at night or totally black and white.
·      The music that could be used in our film should be a soft beat with sounds from a violin or a light instrument.
·      I had the idea of the opening of hardly any speech, and just focusing on solely music and sound from the main character this could then slowly build tension and ask questions to the audience, so they could be thinking “who is he?” “what is he doing?”
·      Another idea which I had was the opening could be like the main character is waking up, so it is a good way to introduce the main character showing what he is like, and what weird/wonderful things he does during the opening
·      Also I think our opening should consist of things happening through out the movie e.g little snippets of things the main character gets up to but not showing the full extent of the work which he does.

A true thriller will keep the audience constantly on the edge of their seats, by using cliff hangers and suspenseful music and images that will lead to a climax in the movie. 200 word synopsis of our film “Natural selection”

200 word synopsis of our film “Natural selection”

The film takes place in a small town, there are few crimes that happen in this town so by having it set here is perfect for our thriller because it is in the everyday typical life for a lot of people. Our film is based around a serial killer who has recently started off his life of crime by booby-trapping cars, vehicles and setting up traps in different rooms with the skills he acquired in his past job as a university science lecturer. The viewer does not find this information out until later in the film where after his third kill takes places and he purposely leaves signs of his past. This thriller focuses on Detective Barns who has been called in to deal with this psychopath after they had reports on his reliability in finding killer in these cases. Detective Barns himself used to be a criminal but after 4 years inside one of the country’s toughest prisons he has come out a reformed man. He gets attached to his work for this reason and believes everybody deserves a second chance, but when these murders keep happening he knows what has to happen.

Certificate 15

We are giving our film a certificate of 15 as there may be dramatic scenes through it but they are not too gory and the film would not dwell on the injury so much as the set up of it. We also contain no shots of sexual or explicit material therefore making it easily a 15 without having to worry about offending or encouraging people in to re-enacting the things in the film.

Thriller target audience

The target audience of a thriller is really based down to the type of thriller, as thriller have a mass supply of sub-genres we cannot just say one group of people are going to like all thrillers as they wont. Thrillers that are rated for older people such as silence of the lambs are aimed at perhaps a younger male audience but then again there are people from all age groups that could still enjoy watching this film. The target audience can be different to the audience that they receive, just because they are aiming the film at an adult for example, doesn’t mean that younger or even older audiences wouldn’t enjoy it. Thrillers with a sub genre of crime may appeal to more adult people as they like to think about films, but this could just be stereo typical as we cant base one persons views within a set base of people. A young person that is interested in psychology could love psychological thrillers even though they are not the target audience.

Detailed textual analysis of the opening of three films

Carry out a detailed textual analysis of the opening of three films of your genre discuss all the stuff

SE7EN:
The very first thing we get at the opening of this films is the digetic sound of police sirens going off, this sound instantly sets the scene by letting us know that this is not going to be a very happy film, we are greeted by one of the main characters who is wandering round his house getting ready, we see a chess board in the room, giving the hint of intelligence and strong mind to the scene. The man who is getting ready does not seem happy when he is looking in to the mirror, the mirror itself shows a reflection of himself as we later learn he is coming up to retirement so he is reflecting on his past. We see him pick up a badge and a knife, two powerful objects that one show authority but also hint at danger. The rain in this opening never ends and by doing this the director has allowed the sense of gloom to hang over the whole scene of conversation between the two detectives once again allowing the viewer to realise that this is not going to be a happy film. The metronome ticking almost shows balance in the scene, only to be followed up by the credits which are almost opposite as we see different short clips of a person shaving their finger prints off, obviously to show that they are not trying to reveal their identity as they are in contrast causing an up-stir, this is different to the equilibrium of the metronome, the director may have used this to show that even though things may be looking normal that something dark may always be happening.

Inception:
This film starts with the company that created the film being advertised, there is dramatic music from an orchestra playing in the background, this immediately is creating tension for the audience building the suspense in to what the opening might hold. We see a man waking up on a beach with the sound of the ocean clearly recognisable, he looks up only to see a child and their mother, this calming shot is ended quickly as another man comes in the scene with a gun poking the passed out, washed up man in the back to check if he’s alive. By bringing a gun in to the scene we can tell already that this thriller is action packed and as he finds the pistols in the back of the mans trousers we start to think who this man is. This sense of mystery is what can help a thriller movie create tension. He is put in a different environment with a Chinese man, there is a sense of power around this man as he is obviously rich, the main character has his head down as he’s eating showing respect to the man, we don’t know whether to respect this man or if he is going to hurt the main character, so suspense is once again building to keep the audience in their seat. A good thriller will want the audience constantly on the alert, questioning the film and whats happening.

Fight club:
This film is different to the other two as it starts with the title screen, the movie behind the titles is a close up microscopic view of the brain starting out at the fear centre, even if the viewer was not to know where is was we could tell immediately that it has a more psychological side to the thriller, this would be good for people that like to think about a thiller instead of just watching dramatic, tense building scenes. Wondering  what is going to happen in the sequence is part of a good thriller movie. I might want to make our movie have a more direct approach to the film as I think the audience sometimes likes to guess ahead of what’s going to happen, and when it does happen they feel pleased with themselves.

Media priliminary

This video includes me (Antony Jakab), Aaron Nicholson and Jamie Locke doing a short clip of walking and having short conversations demonstrating the 180 degree rule.

Target audience

I believe my target audience are going to be late teens to early adults. I want to aim for this age group as I think they are the people most interested in films and as they are usually more social they may enjoy watching thriller films with their friends as a good night in. I also think that they will enjoy to watch them as they would be just old enough to watch all of the films as they are just over 15 or even 18 so the world of film becomes much more open to them. I believe either male and female thriller lovers, or even people that love watching a good film, will enjoy this film as there is an appeal to both male and females. So all in all I don’t see men or women being more interested in our film as it appeals to both genders, this will get it a better audience.

Questionnaires

1) What is your favourite genre of film out of the following?
a) Thriller b) Horror c) sci-fi d) action

2) what is your favourite film from the following?
a) Avatar b) shutter island c) saw d) pulp fiction
3) if watching a thriller who with and where do you watch them?

4) favourite out of the following names?
a)Alternative ending b) Natural selection c) boost D) metalic making
thriller shutter island, at home in bed/with friends, metalic making
thriller, avatar, home in bed, natural selection
horror, saw, anywhere with friends, natural selection
horror, shutter island/saw, own room with friends, alternative ending

horror, pulp fiction, friends & in bed, natural selection
action avatar CINEMA, metalic making
Thriller, Pulp Fiction, Me, alternative ending
From my short questionnaire I have already been able to have an insight on teenage audience’s preference in film. It seems that my audience like to go for the darker side of film, my results show that 3 people prefer thriller and 3 prefer horror, I think these as similar as they are sub-genres within each other so people who chose them may not have been too sure on the difference as so many films have more than one genre in them, but at least they show that thriller movies are a more favorable film alongside with horror. So does this mean people like to be on the edge of their seat, constantly wondering what is going to happen to them? I believe from the places they have chosen that they like to be scared as people that had chosen thriller or horror as their choice either preferred watching movies in their own room either alone or with friends, or were happy as long as they were with friends. I believe this is because people like the excitement but know they won’t be too scared if they are surrounded by friends that will find it just as exciting as them. The one that said they like action movies and watching them in the cinema showed me an important link, people go to the cinema to watch the big action films but when it comes to thriller they would prefer to be in the comfort of their own home rather than with multiple people that they do not know. From the feedback we had been given, we decided to choose the name "Natural selection". I believe that the public will preffer this as they will wonder what it could be about, also confusing the situation because in the film will it realy be natural selection that is the big deal?
I am pleased with my results as I would have hoped that thriller would be a popular choice as we are making a thriller film, I hope ours turns out the way we can imagine it to be.

Comparison of 15 and 18 age settings

The difference in 15 and 18 certificates on films is given to stop people from a certain age watching content that they should not be watching. 15 being given to those who are under 15 and 18 given to all those who are under 18.
The 15 mark on movies in fact cover a lot of things in its limitations, for example there could be language terms such as “fuck” or “crap” but where stronger words such as “cunt” may only be used if appropriate. 18 allows all language references, it also allows the view of discrimination and drugs to be seen but where in a 15 drug taking can be seen, but the promotion and the consumption of highly dangerous things such as solvent abuse will not be acceptable. Strong threatening horror is aloud as long as it is not sadistic or sexualised in any manner, this means scenes of a scary more horrific nature may be shown but scenes of rape and others may not. As there are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context, it may be shown in films but as long as it is not in too much detail, this is fine in both 15 and 18 films. Any violence in a 15 must not dwell on the pain or injury but the violence may be strong, this varies to an 18 as there can be any violence and graphic images. Any signs or imitable behaviour must be filmed cautiously such as suicide and drug abuse, or they will not be permitted in a 15. There are law emplacements on films for a reason, if children are watching graphic scenes that they do not understand they may try to imitate them just like many cases in the news where children, or even older teens, have imitated films and games.
Some may argue that the film’s limitations are not strong enough, some may argue that they’re to strong, in my personal opinion I believe that the film ratings have been put in place by people that have thought about what they’re doing and therefor are perfectly fine when watched in the right enviroments.

Thrillers

Thrillers are a strong, heavily layered genre which is usually accompanied by many sub-genres. In the film market we usually find many hybrid genre films, this is because being a “thriller” is just a guide line and does not mean every thriller has to include all of these things or it would just be boring. Since a thriller can usually be mixed with a horror or mystery, it creates different and interesting films that vary, showing a versatile range of films. These films and televised programs are easily recognised from their frequent action, suspense building and fast paced scenes. Thrillers usually focus on victims of crime, or on pursed or isolated criminals. The locations in thrillers are usually hard, desolate terrains. Whether it’s an uncontrollable city or a desert, the main role is usually a “hard man” either in an authority position like law enforcement officers, spies, soldiers and so forth. A thriller story line is usually where the main character, which is getting more multi sexual, has to prevent the happenings of serial or mass murder, terrorism, assassination, or the overthrow of governments.
A Thriller usually climaxes when the hero defeats the bad guy, this can be different in some thrillers if the story line is twisted or from another person’s point of view. Twists like the hero having to sacrifice himself, or turning to the other side are what can make us love or hate a thriller. A good example of a thriller is “The Bourne Identity” which was adapted to a movie starring Matt Damon which used many of the thriller conventions of the plot. Though its sequels, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, these films are about an organisation of government that is trying catch our hero who is falsely accused and on the run.
Sub-genres such as crime thrillers (which include films like “seven”), erotic thrillers, conspiracy thrillers and allot more.  There are many different sub-genres just like James Patterson once said “Thrillers provide such a rich literary feast. There are all kinds. The legal thriller, spy thriller, action-adventure thriller, medical thriller, police thriller, romantic thriller, historical thriller, political thriller, religious thriller, high-tech thriller, military thriller. The list goes on and on, with new variations constantly being invented.” This shows us that there are endless possibilities for films as they can be any of these genres, or even a new one that the particular film itself could create. Real life can affect thrillers greatly. For example when the assassination of Kennedy happened in America political thriller and paranoid thriller films became much more popular with the public, so this shows that a life event can determine the popularity of a film and/or the audience it attracts.
So if this short essay has showed anything it is that the film genre of thrillers is a strong, suggestible one that can affect people of all background for many different reasons and it is probably going to carry on being this popular with people for a long time.
